Build up of static electricity can present a real hazard in some environments, such as in the electronics industry, aerospace, and cleanroom facilities.

If static is discharged it can cause damage to sensitive electrical instruments. Static discharge may also need to be eliminated if there is a danger of sparks causing a fire risk, for example where there are solvents or fine powders in the atmosphere.
