Rail - Allerton Depot

At IRL we have a lengthy history partnering with major rail companies in the deployment of slip-resistant floor finishes for both diesel and electric maintenance depots throughout the UK.  So when the Buckingham Group invited us tender for the sub-contract package to complete the Epoxy Floor Paint to the depot floor and pit walls at the Allerton Depot we were more than happy to oblige.

Allerton Depot is owned by Network Rail but operated under lease by Northern Rail.  The depot underwent a full refurbishment in 2011 and it currently provides light maintenance, washing and refuelling facilities for Class 156 DMU’s.  Due to the addition of Class 319 Electric rolling stock to the Northern fleet in July 2014, the decision had been taken to reintroduce overhead electrification to Allerton Depot

As well as the re-introduction of the overhead electrification (25KV) there was also some enhancements to the operation of the depot to accommodate 2x4-car units by extending the depot and facilitating the maintenance and inspection of both electric and diesel vehicles both within the shed and also outside on additional stabling facilities being installed.

The specification required the existing concrete slab to be prepared by a suitable combination of dust free vacuum shot blasting having its own lorry mounted independent 3 phase power supply, diamond grinding and STR light mechanical abrading containing all dust and debris in sealed containers.  To supply and apply by roller and brush two coats of Pumatect high build coating. 

Pumatect is a two-component virtually solvent free epoxy floor coating offering excellent abrasion and chemical resistance. Pumatect provides a tough, hard wearing coating for medium duty traffic giving high film build and wear resistance with a gloss finish in a range of attractive colours. Typical uses for medium duty areas requiring an easy to clean, tough and durable coating with excellent chemical resistance such as warehouses, factories, workshops, showrooms, packing and storage areas. Pumatect can also be used as a sealcoat for broadcast systems such as Intermediate Car Park Decks.
